With the vast amount of information available, experts agree that trends are moving more and more toward digitally enhanced case labeling equipment and coding technologies. A recent report published in Packaging Digest shared some pretty amazing stats surrounding today’s digital advancements for packaging professionals. For example:
- Big beverage brands including Absolut, Anheuser-Busch and Coca-Cola have leveraged digital printing incredibly successfully. Based on a study published by Smithers Pira, the label printing and digital packaging sectors that were valued at $10.5 billion last year are expected to grow at 13.6% CAGR (compound annual growth rate) to 2020.
- Since January 2015 the lot-level traceability requirements set by the Drug Supply Chain Security Act have been set to increase in terms of serialization of pharmaceutical products. While patient safety is key, the American Enterprise Institute estimates that the world’s economy loses approximately $10 billion every year from substandard and counterfeit medication. But by November 2023 pharmaceutical manufacturers are going to need full electronic traceability in place for packages.
- According to McKinsey & Co, by 2025 the economic impact the Internet of Things (IoT) will be so immense that it could amount to $6 trillion. Factories, believe it or not, will be the biggest user sector. As Packaging Digest points out, those in the packaging industry are already seeing benefits of information from today’s smart sensors to improve packaging machinery performance.
